Bendigo Foodshare celebrates 10 million kilos of food rescued
Bendigo Foodshare is celebrating a major milestone this month – reaching 10 million kilos of rescued and donated food since the organisation began in 2013.
The milestone coincides with the launch of Bendigo Foodshare’s Regular Giving Appeal, now in its second year, with a clear message to the community: “help us reach the next 10 million kilos.”
The appeal invites locals to sign up as regular givers, helping ensure the charity can continue rescuing surplus food and redistributing it to people experiencing food insecurity across central Victoria.
Bendigo Foodshare CEO Michelle Murphy said every kilo represents a meal, a family supported, and a moment of relief.
“Reaching 10 million kilos is an incredible milestone and one that reflects the generosity of our whole community,” Ms Murphy said.
“Hundreds of volunteers and thousands of supporters over the past 13 years have aided our work so we can rescue surplus food that would otherwise be wasted, redistributing it through over 90 community organisations.
“Unfortunately demand shows no sign of easing — we’re currently supporting 15,500 people every week across central Victoria who need help to put a meal on the table.”
The charity currently has 100 people who donate each month to support its work – a group affectionately called ‘Food Champions’. This year, Bendigo Foodshare is hoping to double the number of Regular Givers, asking people to sign up to contribute $20 a month to help meet ongoing demand for food relief across the region.
“Regular giving provides stability,” Ms Murphy added.
“It allows us to plan ahead, keep our warehouse and vehicles running, purchase essential food items, and support programs such as our youth cooking programs – all of which make a real, daily difference. When people give a small amount each month, it adds up to a big impact for our community.”
Regular Giver Bruce McKaskill said he donates each month as it provides security for Bendigo Foodshare to do what they do best. “Their work goes on behind the scenes day in day out. They constantly give and rarely ask, but they are always there for our community – filling the cracks, serving the needy, responding to disasters.”
