Behind every book and DVD you pick up at one of our Book Fairs is a dedicated group of volunteers who spend hours each week carefully sorting and categorising each item ready for sale. One of those volunteers is Debbie, a familiar face behind the scenes for many years. Debbie has officially been volunteering with Bendigo Foodshare since 2023, when the Y Service Club of Bendigo handed over the running of the Book Fair to us.

If you’ve visited one of our Book Fairs recently, you may have noticed that every DVD and box set is meticulously categorised, labelled and packed, ready for its next home. That organisation is a true credit to Debbie’s care, attention to detail and commitment to ensuring the Book Fair continues to raise vital funds to support people in our community.

What began as a desire to help fundraise for those doing it tough has grown into something even more meaningful for Debbie—strong friendships and a genuine sense of community with the people she volunteers alongside each week.

“I enjoy the company of the amazing people I work with and knowing that what I do is helping others in need,” Debbie says.

Outside of Bendigo Foodshare, Debbie’s commitment to community runs deep. She volunteers with several local organisations and currently sits on the committee of the Strathfieldsaye & Districts Community Enterprise, advocating for local improvements such as the Axe Creek Project. She is also deeply involved with the Scots Baseball Club, volunteering on the committee and helping with planning, events, clinics, and liaising with Council to support upgrades to local baseball facilities.

Previously, Debbie served for over 10 years as Secretary of the Bendigo Easter Fair Society, helping plan and deliver many iconic events—including the 150th anniversary celebrations, Family Day at the Lake and the 100th anniversary of the first women’s cricket match held in Bendigo.

Despite her many commitments, Debbie is unfailingly present at her Book Fair volunteering shifts and wholeheartedly encourages anyone thinking about volunteering to take the leap.

“It’s a wonderful experience and it feels good to give back to the community. You can make great friends too—just find the niche you enjoy and you won’t look back. Most organisations really appreciate and need your help.”
