David has enjoyed a 40-year professional career in corporate life; working in banking, running his own small retail business in the Mallee, and for most of his career, undertaking senior roles at companies in the insurance industry.
David first connected with Bendigo Foodshare in 2021 when he volunteered in the warehouse and as a driver assistant, before he joined the Board late in 2023, bringing with him invaluable insight resulting from his passion for volunteering.
When asked what inspired him to join Bendigo Foodshare, he said, “initially I wanted to transition to retirement and ‘give back’ to society, and when I found out about Bendigo Foodshare, the values and goals lined up nicely to my own, so I thought it was a perfect fit.”
Apart from the good and valuable service Bendigo Foodshare provides, it’s the people that keep him interested and involved. All the volunteers give their time freely, and David finds it’s a pleasure to work with like-minded people. The banter and camaraderie keep him coming back.
When asked what he would say to someone contemplating volunteering in their community, David said “do it! It is exceptionally rewarding, and a great way to help provide a necessary service to those who need it most.”
David has a philosophy about how to make the most out of life. He says, “we will be the same person we are today in 5 years time, except for the people we meet and the books we read. Enjoy yourself, it’s later than you think!”
He is also a firm believer in taking personal responsibility for self-development. David advocates that “success leaves clues” and that speaking with successful people and asking them the right questions can be the key to enhancing your own achievements by finding out the secrets to their success.
