We recently welcomed the change of seasons in the beautiful Long Gully Neighbourhood Centre Inc by hosting another successful gardening workshop with the Karen community. The weather was perfect for a hands-on day of learning and connecting with nature.

In partnership with Bendigo Community Health Services, the workshop followed on from an information session, building participants’ knowledge of growing food in Bendigo – the unique characteristics of Bendigo soil, the different Australian seasons, what grows best in each season, and how to adapt growing techniques to suit foods from their home country.
During the workshop, participants learnt how to make their own potting mix and construct a wicking bed—a great way to grow plants efficiently using less water.

Each participant went home with:
  • A bag of home-made potting mix
  • A veggie patch in a pot
  • A set of hand tools
  • A variety of Karen cultural vegetables seeds to grow in their own garden
To wrap up the day, everyone enjoyed a delicious lunch, making it not only educational but also a lovely social occasion.
We’re so proud of the enthusiasm and sense of community that continues to grow through these workshops.
