Towards the end of last term, Kaw Khu demonstrated great courage by stepping outside his comfort zone and undertaking a work experience placement at Bendigo Foodshare.

Kaw Khu is an English as an Additional Language (EAL) student from Weeroona College Bendigo. Having resettled in Australia just over a year ago, he embraced this opportunity to learn and gain new experiences despite having limited English language skills.

After first connecting with Bendigo Foodshare through last year’s Cooking for Change program, it was wonderful to welcome Kaw Khu back for work experience and see him continue building his confidence, skills, and connection to community.

On his first day, Kaw Khu joined Bendigo Senior NETschool students and local artist Angela Dunstone from Scribbles Face Painting; scribbles facepainting to help transform our garden shed with a vibrant new food-themed mural. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with others and contribute to a community project.

Over three days, Kaw Khu experienced many different aspects of Bendigo Foodshare. He spent time at Golden Gums Farm, learned about the logistics of food rescue and gained an understanding of how food relief is distributed across our region. He also learned about the challenges of food insecurity in Central Victoria and the important role community organisations play in supporting people needing the extra help.

We are incredibly proud of Kaw Khu for embracing this opportunity with such a positive attitude and willingness to learn. We wish him all the very best as he continues to build his confidence, skills and future work pathways.
