We often get asked – Why is Bendigo Foodshare now selling produce?
An important initiative of our Grow Cook Share Food Hub is Golden Gums Farm- a working market garden where young people can learn how to grow produce, and where we foster food equity.
Our motto for the produce we grow at the farm is – the food we grow is for all!
Yesterday’s harvest by our young Food Hub Officers, Ethan and Meg was a great example of this, harvesting –
- Salad mix, rhubarb, asparagus and silverbeet to sell at PepperGreen Farm Cafe Shop.
- Silverbeet for sharing through Bendigo Foodshare’s food relief program.
- Spring onions and coriander for tomorrow’s Cooking for Change session with students from Bendigo Tafe.
Why is this important? Through partnerships with local growers, organisations and businesses like PepperGreen Farm, we are working towards increasing Bendigo’s food security by increasing access to affordable, fresh, healthy and sustainably grown produce for more people in our community. Profits from Golden Gums produce sales go straight back into this important project.
If this is important to you too, visit Peppergreen Farm where you can purchase some of this delicious produce, along with produce straight from their patch and products from other local makers of food, enjoy a coffee and something to eat, and explore their beautiful surroundings.
