A lot goes on behind the scenes to bring each Bendigo Foodshare Book Fair to life. From checking the condition of donated books to sorting them by genre and carefully packing them into boxes ready for shelving, it’s a physical job—and an essential one.

One of the dedicated volunteers who make it all happen is Graeme, who has been part of the Bendigo Foodshare family for three years. He spent his first 18 months volunteering at our main warehouse before moving to the Book Fair team, where he now helps twice a week, preparing thousands of books for our Book Fair events.

Graeme says he still feels amazed seeing just how many people love to read, especially when he sees the crowds turning up at our events. As an avid reader himself, he’s particularly fond of sports books—especially anything to do with cricket.

Before joining us, Graeme spent 35 years as a teacher, including 29 years teaching science at Eaglehawk Secondary School. After his teaching career, he dedicated another 15 years to supporting young people with special needs through his work with the Bendigo Council.

For Graeme, volunteering at the Book Fair isn’t just meaningful—it’s also great exercise. “It’s hard work physically, but rewarding,” he says.

Stories like Graeme’s remind us how fortunate we are to have such passionate people supporting Bendigo Foodshare. Our volunteers truly are incredible.
