Growing fresh produce to support our work is a true team effort. It’s thanks to dedicated Golden Gums Farm volunteers like Ray who, week after week, ensure central Victorians doing it tough have access to fresh and nourishing food.

When Ray moved to Bendigo from Western Australia two years ago, it didn’t take long for him to find a meaningful way to connect with his new community. Having relocated to be closer to his grandchildren, he soon discovered volunteering opportunities at Bendigo Foodshare through the Bendigo Volunteer Resource Centre—and he has been an integral part of our farm team ever since.

After a busy career in government procurement, Ray was looking for a way to keep both his mind engaged and his body active. Drawing on a touch of farming experience from his childhood, along with previous volunteering with a forestry group in WA, he’s found his happy place at Golden Gums Farm. You’ll also find him busy maintaining the Food Hub grounds at our Breen Street warehouse.

We’ve come to know Ray for his dedication, attention to detail and infectious positive energy. Whether he’s keeping the garden beds in top condition, meticulously tidying the shed, or carefully cleaning and polishing every pumpkin harvested this season, his pride in his work shines through. We are continually impressed by the care, and effort Ray brings to every task.

Despite joking that he “hates cooking”, Ray understands the important role he plays in helping provide fresh, nutritious food to the community. “It’s as much for me as it is for the community”, he says. For Ray, volunteering is not only about giving back—it’s also about staying active, getting out of the house, and maintaining his physical wellbeing.

He also finds genuine satisfaction in seeing a plant grow from a tiny seedling into a finished product that supports people across Central Victoria—gaining a deeper appreciation along the way for where food comes from and the work of local farmers and growers.

Ray firmly believes that every contribution matters. “Even if it’s for only two hours, every bit counts and helps give back to the community”, he says.

We’re always looking for more volunteers to join our Golden Gums Farm team. If Ray’s story has inspired you, why not get involved? Sign up to volunteer today and help make a difference.
