For the past three years, Elaine has been a valued member of the Bendigo Foodshare family. Every week you’ll find her sorting rescued fruit and vegetables with her trademark enthusiasm for keeping things organised. A few times a year you’ll also spot her behind the BBQ at the Bendigo Community Farmers’ Market, chatting with locals and helping raise funds to support food relief across our region.
Elaine’s journey to Bendigo Foodshare is rooted in a lifetime of caring for others. Before she retired, she spent many years as a primary school teacher and worked in secondary schools as a music teacher and librarian. She’s also volunteered with Meals on Wheels and Vinnies, following a deep passion for helping people in need.
When Elaine joined Bendigo Foodshare after COVID, she instantly felt at home. “I’m really grateful to have the chance to volunteer here. I love the camaraderie, the support you feel is constant,” she says.
For Elaine, volunteering is joyful, purposeful work. “We work hard because we enjoy it. There is so much to be proud of here. It would be hard to find somewhere better.”
She loves encouraging others to give volunteering a try, reminding people that “you don’t have to have a skill to work here, just a willingness”.
When she’s not volunteering, Elaine’s schedule is anything but quiet. She sings in a choir and a singing group that performs in aged care and hospital settings. She also enjoys woodworking at the women’s shed and loves spending time crafting. With five children, six grandchildren and three great‑grandchildren, her family keeps her wonderfully fulfilled too.
Travel is a big part of Elaine’s life. After retiring, she and her late husband sold their house, packed up their van, and spent years travelling around Australia, with North Queensland and Western Australia among her favourites. She’s also visited 22 countries, with New Zealand holding a special place in her heart. And she’s not done yet; she has plans to keep exploring the world.
Elaine embodies everything that makes Bendigo Foodshare special. We’re so lucky to have her as part of our volunteer family.
