We are so lucky to have an incredible team of volunteers, and we just love the opportunity to make them known to our supporters – so allow us to introduce you to the fabulous Jillian Maher!

Jillian has been with the Bendigo Foodshare team for just under 2 years and originally started out helping at our Golden Gums Farm, but is now part of our fruit and veg squad in our Warehouse on Tuesday afternoons. This crucial task ensures that only the freshest and highest quality produce is distributed to families and individuals in need.

Jillian explained that after retiring approximately four years ago, she felt that she had time to offer an organisation her experience and passion for improving the lives of others who have found themselves in a less fortunate situation. The flexibility, variety of volunteering opportunities and the friendships developed through a shared cause have been really positive factors for keeping Jillian actively volunteering here at Bendigo Foodshare.

Volunteering in the warehouse has been an incredibly rewarding experience. I love knowing that my efforts are directly contributing to the well-being of our community. Sorting fruit and vegetables may seem like a small task, but it has a big impact on the lives of those who receive our produce. I am grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this wonderful team and to help make a difference.”

The impact of volunteering for Jillian, cannot be understated, “Everyone has something to offer, and you’ll be amazed how much you will gain from it.”

“It’s good for your mental health too – to feel needed, and to share experiences with people from different backgrounds. It’s really enlightening and enriching.”

Prior to volunteering at Bendigo Foodshare, Jillian enjoyed a varied career – working in legal offices, school offices when her children were small, and for the past 15 or so years, has been involved in home care and working with people living in supported accommodation.

Jillian’s passion for helping others has been a lifelong commitment, however, it doesn’t only extend to people. Jillian also has a deep love for horses, and has rescued, rehabilitated and rehomed a number of horses in need of care. She has also volunteered with Riding for Disabled, combining her love of helping people and her love of horses.

Jillian’s dedication, hard work, and positive spirit have made her an invaluable member of our volunteer team. We are incredibly grateful for Jillian’s commitment and look forward to seeing the continued impact of her efforts in the future.
