In December 2025, the Victorian Government announced plans to merge the world’s first health promotion foundation, VicHealth, into the Department of Health.
At Bendigo Foodshare we have joined local organisations and more than 300 community and health leaders across Victoria in calling on the State Government to keep VicHealth independent, strong and fully funded.

For almost 40 years, VicHealth has played a critical role in helping Victorians stay healthy and well – not just by treating illness, but by preventing it in the first place.
To show support for VicHealth across the state, the Save VicHealth group has been formed and a petition launched calling on the Government to preserve VicHealth’s independence. The petition has now received more than 5,000 signatures, and the group is awaiting a response from the Premier.

Why this matters locally
Over the past five years, VicHealth funding has supported Bendigo Foodshare to engage with thousands of young people, helping them build practical life skills, learn how to grow food, and cook affordable, nutritious meals.
Bendigo Foodshare Board Chair Sue Clarke said VicHealth’s investment has enabled meaningful local partnerships that respond directly to community needs. “VicHealth’s investment in our local community has allowed us to partner and create local solutions that have had a profound impact for marginalised groups such as the Karen refugee population and young people disengaged from community,” Sue said. “The true impact of this prevention work for our younger generation is immeasurable. It strengthens resilience and builds a healthier future for our entire community,” Sue said.

Prevention keeps communities well
Keeping VicHealth independent allows it to work alongside communities for the long term – beyond political cycles – to back new ideas, build trust and address the root causes of poor health. This kind of prevention work reduces pressure on hospitals, supports mental and physical wellbeing, and helps communities thrive close to home. At Bendigo Foodshare, we see firsthand how access to good food, food skills and connection can change lives. Prevention is not optional – it is essential.
