Brian Hill is a commercial lawyer based in Bendigo who joined the Bendigo Foodshare Board in 2024, taking on the role of Company Secretary. With a background in law and public service, Brian has a strong understanding of governance, risk and strategy – and a deep commitment to supporting his local community.
“As Secretary, I help keep the Board on track – ensuring our governance is solid, our records are sharp, and that we’re meeting all our legal and reporting obligations,” he says. “I also contribute legal and strategic insights to support the team behind the scenes so they can focus on doing what they do best – feeding our community.”
Brian’s motivation for joining Bendigo Foodshare is simple and deeply held. “I’ve always believed that food is a basic human right – and in a place like Bendigo, where community spirit runs deep, no one should go without. When I saw the impact Foodshare was having locally, I jumped at the chance to get involved.”
His career spans 14 years in the public sector – including disaster recovery and Indigenous service delivery – followed by a shift into law, where he now helps local businesses navigate complex regulations with clarity and confidence. He says those experiences have shaped his contribution to the Board.
“Whether it’s reviewing agreements, navigating governance requirements, or thinking through risk and compliance, my legal experience helps the Board operate with confidence and clarity.”
So far, the highlight of the role has been the people. “Every meeting, every update, and every story reminds me how many lives are touched by this organisation – and how many people care enough to make it happen.”
And his advice to anyone thinking about volunteering? “Do it. You’ll never regret showing up – but you might regret staying on the sidelines. It doesn’t matter what skills you bring; there’s always a place for people who care.”
Outside of work, Brian admits he’s “a bit of a BBQ tragic” – happiest behind a smoker or BBQ, feeding friends, family… or anyone who will let him loose with a pair of tongs.
