We recently kicked off our Cooking for Change program with participants from Bendigo District Aboriginal Co‑operative (BDAC). The group began the program by spending time at Bendigo Foodshare’s Breen Street site, learning more about the work we do across our organisation to address food security in Greater Bendigo.

The visit gave participants an overview of how we respond to food insecurity in multiple ways — from food relief for people doing it tough, through to prevention programs that build skills, confidence and longterm food security. The group also heard about our plans for the future, including our Community Food Hub masterplan, and the role community partnerships play in shaping inclusive, communityled food systems.

From there, participants rolled up their sleeves and took part in Cooking for Change cooking sessions focused on cooking with purpose. The purpose – to directly support BDAC community members doing it tough with nutritious meals that strengthen ties to mob, together in a safe space to build connection, care and pride. Across two handson sessions, the group worked together to prepare more than 100 meals that went straight into BDAC’s community food relief program. Participants built their skills and confidence making healthy meals, shared stories and laughter, and came together over good food and a shared goal.

The partnership between Bendigo Foodshare and BDAC extends well beyond the kitchen. Together, we continue to work alongside one another to support Aboriginal people and young people through culturally safe food programs, community food relief, employment pathways, and opportunities to get involved in making a difference through cooking, volunteering and leadership.

This Cooking for Change program was such a success that we’re now exploring future sessions together, continuing to build on a strong relationship grounded in shared values, trust and community impact.

Cooking for Change is proudly supported by Bendigo Community Health Services, Healthy Loddon Campaspe and City of Greater Bendigo.
