A vibrant, multicultural group of students from Bendigo South East College’s EAL (English as an Additional Language) program came together for Bendigo Foodshare’s Cooking for Change program – and the results were nothing short of inspiring!
The students represent a wide range of cultures: Middle Eastern, Filipino, Indonesian, South African, South Sudanese, Indian, Spanish, and Karen. Across two sessions, they didn’t just cook; they shared stories, languages, and traditions, turning the kitchen into a space of learning and connection.
While preparing 90 healthy meals for food relief, students built essential food safety and cooking skills, strengthened teamwork, and grew their confidence in English. One of the most heartwarming moments? They taught each other the names of kitchen tools in their own languages – from Arabic to Karen to Spanish – while learning the English words too. A simple knife became a bridge between cultures, sparking laughter and curiosity as everyone compared pronunciations and meanings.
In the second session, the room buzzed with excitement as students worked in small groups, tasting and adjusting flavours to create dishes that reflected their heritage. They proudly served a splendid multicultural lunch to staff, including the College Principal. The menu featured:
- Pani Puri
- Chicken Kabsa
- Lamb Kabuli Pulao
- Tofu Pulao
- Mixed Salad
- Karen Coconut Sticky Rice Balls
- Fresh Fruit
As flavours mingled, so did friendships. Students explained how their dishes are traditionally eaten, sharing stories of home and family.
One student summed it up perfectly: “This was the best day of my life.”
Another added: “I want to do this all day, every day.”
These sessions weren’t just about food – they were about connection, confidence, and celebrating diversity. Cooking for Change truly shows how food can unite us all.
