Specimen Hill Primary trials food pantry

SPECIMEN Hill Primary School is trialling a food pantry for the school community in an effort to tackle food insecurity.

With the help of Bendigo Foodshare, the school is making fresh foods and non-perishable essentials available to those in need.

The school previously provided food hampers to families it knew were struggling.

Assistant principal Jac Louttit said the COVID-19 pandemic had highlighted the need within the school community and prompted the school to think differently about how it made food available.

Instead of phoning to request a hamper, families are able to take what they need from the pantry when visiting the school.

Our greatest need is a larger warehouse facility as we have outgrown our current premises. This funding announcement means we will get $400K towards the fit out of our proposed new premises in Garsed St Bendigo.

The cost of the fitout required for our new premises has been estimated at $1.2M,

Food drive provides enough food for 2,800 meals for locals in need

Central Victorians have rallied to support Bendigo Foodshare’s community food drive, donating 1,410 kilograms of non-perishable food, which roughly equates to 2,800 meals for local people in need.

Recent statistics show that more than 25,000 people in the Bendigo region are living close to or below the poverty line, putting them at serious risk of food insecurity and hunger.

In 2019, Bendigo Foodshare supported more than 12,400 people each week with donated, surplus and rescued food with the help of almost 100 local charities, community groups, early learning centres and schools.

Bendigo Foodshare is particularly grateful to the organisations below that collected food on its behalf in November and December,
